Hit Systems is getting into the Christmas spirit. We are in full support of the Kluck Christmas Blessing.

http://www.kluckchristmasblessing.com

The Kluck family has been serving faithfully for the past 15 years in Cameroon, Africa. Recently returning to the United States due to medical reason they do not have much in the way of worldly wealth. Over the past several years, families from across the US have joined together to bless the Kluck family at Christmas by sending boxes with gifts and essentials. This effort was quickly coined the "Kluck Christmas Blessing."

Since arriving in the United States over a year ago, the Klucks have been living in an 850 square foot, 2 bedroom, furnished missionary apartment. They have no stove — Mary Ellen has been cooking with a 2-burner hot plate, table top toaster oven, & a microwave. The only furniture they own is a bed and 2 desks they bought at a garage sale, a donated couch and love seat, and a Lazy Boy they purchased from Salvation Army. The belongings they left in Cameroon are not worth bringing back to the States.

We believe that God wants to bless the Kluck Family this Christmas by providing them with funds to purchase & furnish a house with cash — outright. We hope you will prayerfully consider your part in making this the best Kluck Christmas Blessing ever.

Merry Christmas!

Its no secret that Google rules the roost when it comes to search engines. That is why it is so important to ensure your website is properly optimized to be displayed in Googles Search Engine. While the algorithim Goog uses to place your site is a hazy, there are a few key items that are common knowledge. Proper keyword placement is imperative to getting traffic to your site.

Google has an entire department dedicated to helping Webmasters get there site properly crawled by google. They recently released a new tool called the "Search-Based Keyword Tool"

Webmasters can enter their sites URL and query common keywords associated  with it. More importantly, it will inform you the amount of times these keywords are searched per month.

Check it out, you may be suprised to find your low-traffic site could become a hit just by changing a few words.

Every once in a while I come across a virtual machine that will refuse to shut down. Nothing short of shutting down the entire Hyper-V host will release the stubborn VM from its indefinite “Shutting down..” state. I found this primarily happens on Linux and Linux-variant based VMs. This particular one was Free BSD.

After fighting with it for a while I decided to use a bit of google-fu’ to find if anyone else has been having this issue.  I found a fellow Hyper-V’er with a similar issue. He located a work-around. By combining some PowerShell Scripts and a couple commands you to can rest assured you will have total control over your Virtual Machines.

1. Install PowerShell on your 2008 Hyper-V Host

2. Download the following Hyper-V Powershell script. Located Here

3. Unzip the file hyperv.ps1 and drop it in your PowerShell scripts folder. I use the default directory so I just dropped it in C:\Users\Username\

4. You have to modify Powershells execution policy to run this script. This is done by opening Powershell and running the following command. "set-executionpolicy unrestricted"

5. In your Powershell prompt, ensure you are in the correct directory and then load the script with the following command “. .\hyperv.ps1”

6. Once the script is loaded, simply type “kill-vm VMname”

That’s it! Your VM should shut down immediately. I had mine set to Auto-Restart so I had to disable that to keep it from starting right back up.

Hope you enjoyed this tip!

I just wanted to pass on a quick tip.

With previous versions of Microsoft SQL Server (7.0, 2000 & 2005) you could easily open a table from management studio or enterprise manager and change the contents of the data or modify the tables on the fly.

Well with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 it is not that easy. Changes to the database that require the re-creation of the table are no permitted out of the box.  There is however a way around this, a simple little check box that drove me crazy for days.

In Microsoft SQL Studio Management Console go to Tools – Options – Table and Database Designers. There you will see a box that says “Prevent from saving changes that require table re-creation”.

Uncheck that box and wahla you are free to change whatever you want.

If you have had your ear to the streets lately in the IT world I guarantee you have heard this term. It is being thrown around by everyone under the sun. Amazon, VMWare, Microsoft, Google, they all have their own explanation of what “the cloud” is. The main goal from all these providers is to reduce the overall IT footprint in the office. Remove all the hardware from the office and offer everything you need over the internet on a pay-as-you-go model.

Hit Systems is actually considered a cloud-provider. We offer your entire office over the internet for a monthly-fee.

Here is the big difference between us and every other provider out there. We are onboard with the idea of removing everything from your local office, get the servers out of the closets, stop paying for all this hardware that is worthless after a couple years and so forth. However, we have also been in the IT industry for years and know that things just do not change that quickly. There needs to be a transition from traditional computing to full-on “cloud computing”. Hit Systems is leading this transition in the SMB market.

It would be great to just run your entire network on a couple different “cloud platforms” and call it a day. But that’s not how it works in the real world. We know there are millions of industry-specific applications out there that are not ready for the cloud. There has been no one to reprogram these applications into “cloud offerings” This is why Hit Systems still uses traditional Window servers to host them. During this transition period we offer the exact same experience you are used to in your local office, all of your applications still run like they always have. There is no retraining involved; there is no reprogramming of applications you are familiar with.

Hit Systems combines all the cost-saving benefits and reliability of cloud computing, without the expensive and complex retooling of all your products and systems. If your network is Windows-based, we can put you in the cloud today. There is no need to wait around for your application vendor to catch up with the game and develop a new version of your software. Hit Systems has already developed the solution you need.

I encourage all companies to embrace the cloud. It is the way of the future. I guarantee a large majority of companies one day will look back and wonder why they were burning up all this cash on servers and desktops in their office. Get ahead of the curve with Hit Systems.

Hit Systems has been innovating and coming up with solutions for problems that not many people even know exist at this point. For example, how can we ensure our clients have secure connections back to their Hosted Systems? Originally we had toyed with the idea of having one beefy firewall that everyone would connect back to, that firewall would then direct each client to their specified network. However, when we started to put this into practice we realized it was going to be a mess once we got a significant number of clients on the system. Plus having every user going through the same tunnel is a bit of a security risk.

So then what? We couldn’t justify filling up our rack with tons of hardware firewalls? The solution was sitting in front of our faces. If the entire network was virtual, why couldn’t the firewall be as well?

Our engineers set out to find a robust, secure, and reliable firewall operating system that we could run on our grid. We ran through just about every firewall distribution out there. Some had features we liked, but were lacking others. Some were great but were not compatible with our virtualization layer. We finally found a great firewall that can handle our clients load while being secure and stable at the same time.

Not one to give away company secrets I am going to leave it at that. However, rest assured that Hit Systems has put tons of research into ensuring our clients have the best and most secure experience possible each time they connect to their hosted systems. Stay tuned as Hit Systems forges the road to a brighter IT future.

I was Internet Explorer’s #1 fanboy for the longest time. I scoffed at all these Firefox users wondering why they were wasting their time with their fancy Fox browser. After all, I have been getting along just fine on the internet with my trusty IE.

I was excited when MS announced IE 8 was available for download; I got it right away and started using it. I found that there were some really cool new features but a large majority of websites would not work properly. I was talking to a co-worker describing all the new features, he informed me that Firefox has had these features for years AND it actually works properly.
I secretly downloaded Firefox and began using it, after a few days I was a changed man. So long Internet Explorer, You were a great browser but our relationship is over. It’s not me, its you.
Now that I’ve converted over I am discovering the awesome community behind Firefox. There are some great Add-Ins and tweaks for this browser. I will cover some of my favorite Add-Ins in a later entry. For now here are some quick and easy tips to get your Firefox browser going even faster!

To get started, open your Firefox web browser. In the address/location bar type [about:config] and then press your Enter key. (NOTE: DON’T TYPE THE BRACKETS.)

Tweak #1:
In the Filter bar type [network.http.pipelining]. Then, double-click on this line under Preference Name in order to change the value from false to true.

Tweak #2:
In the Filter bar type [network.http.pipelining.maxrequests]. Then, double-click on this line under Preference Name and change the value from 4 to a higher number anywhere from 10 to 30. I set mine to 30.

Tweak #3:
In the Filter bar type [network.http.proxy.pipelining]. Then, double-click on this line under Preference Name in order to change the value from false to true.

Tweak #4:
In the Filter bar type [network.dns.disableIPv6]. Then, double-click on this line under Preference Name in order to change the value from false to true.

Tweak #5:
In the Filter bar type [plugin.expose_full_path]. Then, double-click on this line under Preference Name in order to change the value from false to true.

Tweak #6:
In the Filter bar type [network.protocol-handler.external.ms-help]. Now, you are going to create a new Preference Name with an Integer Value. To do this, right-click on this line under Preference Name and select New, then Integer. In the New Integer value box type in [nglayout.initialpaint.delay] and click OK. Then in the Enter Integer value box type [0] (that’s a zero) and click OK.

Tweak #7:
In the Filter bar again type [network.protocol-handler.external.ms-help]. Now, you are going to create another new Preference Name with an Integer Value. To do this, right-click on this line under Preference Name and select New, then Integer. In the New Integer value box type in [content.notify.backoffcount] and click OK. Then in the Enter Integer value box type [5] and click OK.

Tweak #8:
In the Filter bar again type [network.protocol-handler.external.ms-help]. Now, you are going to create another new Preference Name with an Integer Value. To do this, right-click on this line under Preference Name and select New, then Integer. In the New Integer value box type in [ui.submenuDelay] and click OK. Then in the Enter Integer value box type [0] (that’s a zero) and click OK.

Now, close your web browser and restart it. You’ll see how much faster web pages are loading. I sure did.
